Anna Finestone LeViereAnna Finestone LeViere
Executive Director

Anna graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a bachelor's degree in International Studies, focusing on Global Health. She received her Masters in Public Health from Boston University with a double concentration in International Health and Epidemiology. Her interest in public health began when she traveled to Ghana as a member of Project Heal at UNC. She has since conducted public health research in Kenya and worked on maternal and child health care in Haiti. She is a Public Service Scholar and a member of Phi Mu Fraternity, and Order of Omega and and Gamma Sigma Alpha honor societies.


Ackom AmuquandohAckom Amuquandoh
In-Country Director

Ackom Amuquandoh is the MedPLUS Connect In-Country Director. Ackom resides in Ghana. He has extensive government experience and currently serves as the Accounts Officer for the head office of the Ghana Tourist Board in Accra. Ackom holds a BS from the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration, as well as a diploma in Business Studies from Accra Polytechnic.

Interns

Atubiga DanielHannah Lawrence
Outreach Specialist 2014

Hannah Lawrence is currently a first year student in the clinical psychology Ph.D. program at the University of Maine with a developmental concentration. Following graduation from Davidson College in 2012 where she was a recipient of an Abernethy Grant and the Edward Imbrogno Scholarship, Hannah served as Lab Coordinator for the Old Dominion Family Health Study. In this role she led a team of undergraduate students in conducting a clinical research trial examining the efficacy of a family based substance abuse treatment on parent and child outcomes. Currently, her research interests are on factors influencing early childhood social competence, and how cultural influences may play a role. In addition, Hannah's clinical focus is on evidence-based treatments for pediatric anxiety disorders.

Atubiga DanielParin Nanavati
MedPLUS Connect Intern 2014

Parin Nanavati graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2013 with a B.S. degree in Biology and Highest Honors. She became interested in public health issues, specifically in Ghana, through her participation and leadership in Project Heal at UNC. While visiting the nutrition center and hospital in Lawra, she became aware of the need to connect the health care system with supplies. Currently, she is a research intern at UNC School of Medicine's Center for Heart and Vascular, where she is involved in studies that focus on bridging gaps in knowledge about sudden cardiac death and atrial fibrillation. In her spare time, she volunteers as a doula at local hospitals and as a day center supervisor at the Wake Interfaith Hospitality Network. In the future, she hopes to serve her community as a medical doctor. Parin is eager to continue to serve the people in Lawra, Ghana as a part of the MedPLUS Connect team.

Atubiga DanielAtubiga Daniel
MedPLUS Connect Intern 2012-2013

Atubiga Daniel is a final year student at the University for Development Studies in Tamale., Ghana. His interest in public health began when he traveled to the US for a medical elective program at the University of Michigan Hospital. It was here that he met Emma Lawrence who told him about the work MedPLUS is doing in Ghana. He has held several leadership positions including serving as the President of his student hostel, Public Relations Officer of the Medical Students Association (MSA) and also the Exchange Officer of the MSA.

Isha SharmaIsha Sharma
MedPLUS Connect Intern 2013

Isha is currently a junior studying Global Health, Medical Anthropology, and Public Policy with a pre-medical concentration at Case Western Reserve University. She strives to receive her MA in Bioethics by the end of her senior year. Additionally, she is involved in several organizations- some include being a Horizons mentor, CCEL tutor, and Imaging Research Assistant at the Case Center for Imaging Research Laboratory for NanoMedical Engineering. She spent her last summer enjoying training and working as an EMT in the Chicagoland area. After graduating, she hopes to spend up to a year traveling the world and ultimately attend medical and/or law school. Isha is ecstatic to be a part of the MedPLUS Connect team!

Emma LawrenceEmma Lawrence

Emma Lawrence was the 2010-2011 Executive Director of MedPLUS Connect and is one of the three founding leaders of the organization. Emma is a 3rd year medical student at the University of Michigan Medical School. She holds a bachelors degree in Public Policy and Psychology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Emma is a Morehead-Cain Scholar, a member of the Order of the Golden Fleece honorary society, and a CCPS Public Service Scholar. She conducted independent research on the role of Ghana's national health insurance scheme in the demand for child health services.

Sonya NarlaSonya Narla
2011-2012 Executive Director

Sonya Narla served as the 2011-2012 Executive Director of MedPLUS Connect and has traveled to Ghana multiple times. She graduated from Case Western Reserve University with a bachelor's degree in English (BA) and a master's degree in Bioethics (MA). Sonya is a Dean's High Honors Scholar, a President's Scholar, and a cum laude graduate. She has extensive experience with service abroad, from serving on a healthcare team in Belize to teaching at an orphanage in South Africa. In addition to the National Community Service & Leadership award, Sonya has also earned the National Gold Award, the highest level of achievement in Girl Scouts, for her past work with Ronald McDonald House Charities. Sonya is currently studying for her medical degree at LECOM.


Emily NixEmily Nix

Emily Nix served as the 2009-2010 Executive Director for MedPLUS Connect. She is one of three founding leaders of MedPLUS Connect. Emily is a PhD candidate in Economics at Yale University. She has served on the Executive Board of UNC's Campus Y and the Frank Porter Graham Selection Committee. She previously worked at Brookings Institute and is a Public Service Scholar at UNC, a North Carolina Fellow, and a National Science Foundation GRFP winner. Emily holds a bachelors degree in mathematics and economics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where she was a Morehead-Cain Scholar.


Lauren Slive GennettLauren Slive Gennett

Lauren Slive Gennett is one of the three founding leaders of MedPLUS Connect. She is currently an associate in the Atlanta office of King & Spalding LLP where she represents healthcare clients in litigation, investigations, and regulatory matters. Lauren holds a JD from Emory University's School of Law and a MPH from Emory University's Rollins School of Public Health. Lauren also holds a BA in Public Policy from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she was a North Carolina Fellow and was elected to the Order of the Golden Fleece honorary society. Lauren led multiple student service trips in West Africa and previously worked for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Center for Adolescent Health & the Law, and the National Health Law Program.


Habib YakubuHabib Yakubu

Habib Yakubu is currently a Public Health Project Coordinator at Emory University. He studied for his Masters degree in Public Health at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He also earned his Bachelor of Science degree at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Ghana. He has been awarded the Raymond and Stangl Scholarship for Public Health from UNC Gillings School of Public Health, the Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowship from the US Department of State, Students Research Travel Award from UNC Gillings School of Public Health, International Internship Award from UNC Center for Global Initiatives and the International Undergraduates Student Summer Scholarship from the University of Cambridge, England.


Harriet SliveHarriet Slive

Harriet Slive is an attorney at Slive & Slive Co., L.P.A. She has been practicing law in Cleveland since 1985. Harriet graduated from The Cleveland Marshall College of Law. She has a Master's Degree from Case Western Reserve University in Student Personnel Administration and is a certified Gestalt therapist. She was the Administrative Director of the Free Medical Clinic of Greater Cleveland from 1973-1985. Harriet's prior activities include: Board member for Free Crisis Services, Secretary for Cleveland Network, Center for Nonviolent Communication, Secretary for MultiCultural Partnership, and Member of Divorce Equity Advocacy Committee.

Honorable Abu SamsonHonorable Abu Samson

Honorable Abu Samson is the District Chief Executive for Lawra District. Honorable Samson was appointed to this position in 2009 by President John Atta Mills with 100% approval of the members of the district assembly. As Chief Executive, Honorable Samson is responsible for the total development of all sectors of the district. Previously, Honorable Samson served as the Administrator of Lawra District Hospital. Honorable Samson is committed to improving healthcare in Lawra.




Dr. Abdulai AbukariDr. Abdulai Abukari

Dr. Abdulai Abukari is the Medical Director of Tumu Hospital. Dr. Abukari is the former Medical Director of Lawra District Hospital. Dr. Abukari received his M.D. at the University of Istanbul and subsequently returned to Ghana where he has been serving the people in the poorest regions of the country. Dr. Abukari is committed to assisting MedPLUS Connect improve both the quality and quantity of health care available to people across Ghana.



Josh PosenJosh Posen

Josh Posen served as the MedPLUS Connect 2011-2012 In-Country Director. While based in Ghana, Josh coordinated multiple shipments for MedPLUS. Josh holds a bachelor's degree in Psychology and a certificate in Markets and Management from Duke University. He spent a year working for the host broadcaster of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, and also worked as a Research Assistant for the Mobility Clinical Research Unit at St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto, Canada. He recently completed the Goucher College Post-baccalaureate Premedical Program, and is currently a MD Candidate. He previously volunteered at the Nsutaman Polyclinic in the Ashanti region of Ghana.


Philip GennettPhilip Gennett

Phil Gennett was the co-initiator of original MedPLUS Connect model & idea, and team member of initial Carolina Challenge team. Phil Gennett is a Vice President of Institutional Sales and Trading at Carolina Capital Markets in Chapel Hill, NC. He has been instrumental in cultivating and supporting the entrepreneurial environment at the university level and is extremely passionate about incubating social entrepreneurship in particular. Phil studied Economics and Entrepreneurship at UNC-CH.



Chuck LovelaceChuck Lovelace

Chuck Lovelace became the third Executive Director of the Morehead-Cain Foundation in 1987. The Morehead-Cain is a prestigious four year scholarship to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The Morehead-Cain also includes a vibrant network of nearly 3,000 Morehead-Cain Alumni. Mr. Lovelace received his B.A. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1977.



Virginia CarsonVirginia Carson

Virginia Carson is the past Director of the UNC-Chapel Hill Campus Y Volunteer Organization. Virginia graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill in 1971 and went on to law school at Columbia University. She practiced communications and corporate finance law in Washington, D. C. from 1974 until 1989, finishing her work in the Washington office of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom. After law practice, she organized Capital Kids' Radio Company to purchase and operate radio stations in Washington and Baltimore. The company inaugurated a music-based format for children and parents, combining news and features written for children with music that the family could enjoy together.Along with operating the radio stations, Ms. Carson worked as an arbitrator, mediator and trainer of arbitrators and mediators for American Arbitration Association and the National Association of Securities Dealers. In Washington, Ms. Carson served on the Board of Directors for Healthy Babies Project, a private non-profit organization providing counseling and access to pre-natal care for disadvantaged and homeless pregnant women.




Eileen HannanEileen Hannan

Eileen Hannan is the Program Manager for student programs at the Semiconductor Research Corporation's Education Alliance. Formerly, she served as Program Officer at the Carolina Center for Public Service at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She received both her Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and Master of Social Work from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her primary role at the Center was to coordinate the Public Service Scholars program, from which Emma Lawrence, Emily Nix and Lauren Slive graduated!



Dr. Etta PisanoDr. Etta Pisano

Dr. Etta Pisano is currently the Dean of the College of Medicine at the University of South Carolina. Previously, Dr. Pisano served as the Vice Dean for Academic Affairs in the UNC School of Medicine for four years. She was also the Kenan Professor of Radiology and Biomedical Engineering and Director of the UNC Biomedical Research Imaging Center, which studies ways to develop and use technology to treat cancer and heart disease, among other ailments. Dr. Pisano was named one of "20 Most Influential People" in radiology by Diagnostic Imaging in 2002 and one of America's best breast cancer doctors by Redbook in 2001. Dr. Pisano served as principal investigator in Digital Mammographic Imaging Screening Trial (DMIST), which showed that digital mammograms are as reliable as film mammograms and are better at finding breast cancer in young women and those with dense breast tissue. Along with her co-inventors, she founded the company NextRay to develop this technology. Dr. Pisano received an A.B. in Philosophy from Darthmouth College, and her M.D. from Duke University.



Karen JamesKaren James

Karen James is the Director of Enrichment and Advising with the Morehead-Cain Foundation. Previously, Ms. James was Associate Director of Advising and Admissions for the Business Administration Program at Kenan-Flagler Business School. During this time, she also was an advisor for the Honors Program and Academic Advising in the College of Arts & Science. Prior to her positions at the University of North Carolina, Ms. James spent eight years practicing law at a top national corporate litigation firm in D.C. and two years with the premier education law firm in North Carolina. She earned her B.A. , M.A. and J.D. at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
